What happens when nature’s most helpless creature gains the power to fight back?
In the fantastical land of Roden, mice were once at the very bottom of the food chain: tiny, fragile, and hunted by everything. Then the Crystal Shards fell from the sky. Within a single generation, these glowing crystalline gems transformed mice from simple prey into an intelligent, technologically advanced civilization. Armed with plasma blasters fueled by berry juice, piloting hand-crafted war machines called Mechs, and powered by sacred Dynamo Gears, the Mech Mice rose to become the defenders of their world.
But power never comes without a price.
The World of Roden
Roden is a continent of staggering scale. At least, when you’re a mouse. A rock becomes a boulder. A patch of shrubs becomes a forest. A single tree is a colossal skyscraper. From wet rainforest jungles to frozen highlands, from wide grassy plains to the treacherous Blackpool Marshes, every step is a journey and every hill is a mountain.
The land is dotted with great Burrow civilizations: Darkwall in the frozen north, Greystone at the continent’s heart, Misthaven near the western jungles, and more, each with its own culture and character. Where the Crystal Shards rest, nature flourishes with abundance. But beyond their reach lie the Erg Wastelands: barren, hostile territories haunted by mutant creatures that defy nature itself. And at the continent’s center, the Dryseed Deadlands stand as a permanent scar, a devastated region where a Crystal Shard was ripped from the earth, killing everything it once sustained.
The Conflict
The Mech Mice are an elite military faction within mouse civilization, the brave few who took up arms to protect their people. Through prowess, diplomacy, and earnest effort, they earned the cautious respect of Roden’s many creatures. But their greatest threat didn’t come from the snakes, the predators, or the wilderness.
It came from within.
The Dark Union is a schism born from the Mech Mice’s own ranks, brilliant minds who followed a terrifying question to its logical conclusion: if we can bend nature to our will, why don’t we do so completely? Led by Dr. Verminion, a rat genius with an oversized brain and a gift for cruelty, the Dark Union believes that nature is the enemy. Why drive a Mech when your entire body could be mechanical? Why permit any threat to exist? Why be a mouse at all?
The Dark Union commands disposable armies of cyborgs and insectoid warriors, weaponizes fear and suspicion, and has already proven what they’re willing to do. The Dryseed Deadlands are their handiwork, a region murdered for power. Now, with the First War of the Shards igniting across Roden, they’ve emerged from the shadows to finish what they started.
The Heroes
Standing against the Dark Union is a squad of five Mech Mice, each one unique, each one essential. Turner, the Commander, is the heart of the team, rallying allies and making sure no one gets left behind. Flank, the Heavy, is an unstoppable wall of armor and firepower. Scratch, the Scout, is lightning-fast and impossibly brave, an orphan who chose hope over bitterness. Dusty, the Sniper, strikes from across the battlefield and keeps the squad alive from a distance. And Lefty, the Grenadier, brings the boom, delivering devastating area attacks that clear the way forward.
Together, they are outgunned, outnumbered, and fighting an enemy that knows all their weaknesses. But they have something the Dark Union will never understand: each other.
The Story
The First War of the Shards is an epic tale told across three acts. It begins with the Dark Union’s devastating surprise attacks, as villages burn and the Mech Mice are blamed for destruction they didn’t cause. The heroes must fight through traps and impossible odds to expose the true enemy and deliver a decisive first blow.
But Dr. Verminion is patient. In the war’s darkest chapter, allies turn traitor, the Mech Mice’s own technology is turned against them, and the heroes come face to face with a villain who believes he’s already won. The Mech Mice are broken, bleeding, and retreating toward a capital that cannot hold.
The final act demands everything. Not just the Mech Mice, but all of Roden must come to its own defense: rats, weasels, barbarian tribes, and even the terrifying beasts of the wilderness. The Mech Mice must walk the fine line between the helpless creatures they once were and the fierce warriors they’ve become. In that sacred tension, they discover a power that Dr. Verminion never calculated.
Mech Mice is Redwall with guns. Band of Brothers with whiskers. Star Wars at a mouse’s scale.
It’s a story about fathers and sons, teamwork and sacrifice, and the courage to fight for a world that’s worth protecting.
